Gung Hay Fat Choy! Year of the Tiger.
As usual, Chinese New Year is always a busy time for the Tat Wong Kung Fu Academy. Besides the Southwest Airlines Chinese New Year Parade we had many Lion Dance performances.
The most unique Lion Dance performance of this Chinese New Year was our performance at Harrah’s Casino in Lake Tahoe, California.
On Saturday, February 21st, our three beautiful gold & silver lions performed at the Harrah’s executive offices, the hotel casino and at a very elaborate VIP banquet. Our team of 15 performers traveled in style in a private coach bus provided by Harrah’s. The beautiful scenery, DVD monitors, reclining seats & good company made the journey up to Tahoe fly by. Once we were in Tahoe, we were treated to wonderful overnight accommodations, our own private Chinese banquet and finally a Sunday Brunch overlooking the mountains & lake.
Harrah’s was so pleased with our performance that they are already planning for an even bigger performance for us next year.
The following weekend, Saturday, February 27th, was the Chinese New Year Parade in downtown San Francisco. Weeks before the New Year began, students from our Bay Area Tat Wong Kung Fu Academies already started learning their routines for this year’s parade. Featured in our parade team were young Tiger Warriors performing an empty hand routine with, of course, plenty of tiger techniques. Also this year, our older advanced student warriors performed an amazing fan routine. And of course there were our Lion Dancers & musicians and our fabulous flag carriers.
As the parade date grew closer, our students from our San Francisco, San Mateo and Concord Academies joined together for parade rehearsals held in San Francisco. This was the time to fine-tune our staging and performance timing for the cameras. And as usual, the Tat Wong Kung Fu Academy had a special featured performance slot during the LIVE TV broadcast by both KTVU FOX 2 and KTSF Channel 26.
With the help, support and hard work of our instructors, students and their families, the Tat Wong Kung Fu Academy looked amazing during the parade!
Thank You to everyone who participated and made the parade great!
Special thanks to our parents for all their help with the costumes and to Thomas So for the parade photos.
