ICMAC - New England Championship

On July 30th, the Connecticut Tat Wong Kung Fu Academy sent a team of 20 competitors and 4 judges to the “New England Championship,” an inaugural event on the ICMAC circuit. As usual, Master Nick Scrima put on a great tournament, helped out by Stanley Jue and his students for who providing the bulk of volunteers for the event. They expected about 200 competitors, but over 400 students packed the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center. Nevertheless, the event went smoothly.

Competition was tough; many styles were represented, and the advanced divisions, especially the 13-17 year-olds, were packed with skilled young folks. I am proud of my whole team, who demonstrated their best, and won a lot of praise from judges and spectators for their skill and sportsmanship. We also walked away with a lot of medals, including 3 Grand Championships, Joshua Curneal, Dakota Lana, and Suzanne Hahl, all of whom did a hand form, long, short, and “other” weapons. I’m particularly proud of 5 Orange Belts who rocked Ng Lun Choi in their first-ever tournament, including two father-daughter teams. Along with 9 Black Belts, and the Orange Belts, we also had one each of every other color sash from Jade up on our team. Our team had competitors as young as 8 and as “old” as 54!  Over 30 medals are gleaming over our reception desk.

Boston is two hours away from us by car, so travel was relatively easy. Although it’s a wonderful city, with lots to see and do, most of us went only for the competition, although a few of us took advantage of cultural and historical sites. We can’t wait to do it again next year! It’s sure to be even bigger and better.
