CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR BLACK BELTS- April 2010(see list below) On Saturday, April 3rd, the Tat Wong Kung Fu Academy held its semi- annual Black Belt Test. The test lasted all day and ended in the evening with the Grand Finale Performance and official Belt & Tea Ceremony. Students of all ages and from the Bay Area Tat Wong Academies of San Francisco, San Mateo and Concord came together for this great achievement. There were a total of 35 students testing. Three tested for 3rd Degree Black Belt, including the mother & son team of Cindy Hom & Daniel, as well as Natalia Ong from the Concord Tat Wong Academy. Also testing were twelve 1st Degree Black Belts and two 2nd Degree Black Belts. Testing started at 12pm and lasted until 6pm. It was a closed session for the Black Belt candidates only and was directed by Master Tat-Mau Wong himself along with his top instructors. At the beginning of the test, Master Wong warned everyone that they would be pushed to their limits and guaranteed that each and everyone of them would definitely feel sore for the next few days. He asked if anyone wanted to back out, of course knowing no one would. Then for the next six hours the candidates were taken through a full & rigorous day of techniques, self-defense, sparring, kicking, hand & weapon forms and strength & endurance challenges. At 6pm, family, friends & classmates were invited to join the celebration. The evening festivities started with the Grand Finale Performance followed by the Traditional Black Belt & Tea Ceremony & concluded with refreshments & snacks. For Master Wong, the six hours of testing and evening celebration flew by. “ I was so energized by the students’ spirit and seeing how into it they were. I enjoyed every moment of it. The overall quality displayed by the students, not only made me proud of the graduates, but of my instructors as well. Their hard work and dedication in training these students for many years and preparing them for the test was obvious in each and everyone. “ When the evening was over, the Black Belts were exhausted but happy and their family and friends were extremely proud. And did they feel the burn of their hours of testing as Master Wong promised? Just ask 3rd Degree Black Belt Daniel Hom, “For days after the test, I was sore all over. I couldn’t even take my own jacket off and had to ask for help. But boy do I feel great!” So was it all worth it? You bet it was! The accomplishment of receiving a Black Belt is a memory that lasts a lifetime.
