Shuai Chiao Competition Rules - 2008 International Kung Fu QUEST - a part of Disney's Martial Arts Festival
Competition
- Competition area will have a minimum of twenty (20) square feet and no wider than twenty-five (25) feet on each side
- Competition area and safety area will be covered by safety mats and devoid of hazards
- Safety area will be clearly labeled and have a minimum of three (3) feet on each side
Weight Divisions
Subject to change based on the number of competitors
Men
Fly : 131 lbs and below
Light : 131-145 lbs
Light Middle : 146-160 lbs
Middle : 151-174 lbs
Light Heavy : 175-194 lbs
Heavy : 195-214 lbs
Super Heavy : 215 lbs and above
Women
Fly : 106 lbs and below
Light : 106-115 lbs
Light Middle : 116-125 lbs
Middle : 126-140 lbs
Light Heavy : 141-155 lbs
Heavy : 155 lbs and above
Equipment and Attire
- Mandatory: traditional shuai chaio uniform and groin cup (male)
- Optional: mouth guard
- Prohibited: glasses and contact lens
Competition Format
- Three (3) rounds of 3 minutes each with one (1) minute rest in between
- Each rounds and times will begin and end as dictated by the Referee
- Points are tallied and announced at the end of each match
- The Referee will stop and reset the match when two or more parts of the
contestant(s)' body touch the mat
- A judge will stop the match if he/she believes a point is to be awarded
Scoring
- Result determined by the first competitor to score two (2) points or by the highest score at the end of the three rounds, or by a tie break round or by a decision, disqualification or foul by a contestant
- Points are awarded to the competitor who:
- Throws the opponent so that his/her back or any part thereof touches the mat
- Throws the opponent so that both knees touch the mat
- Throws the opponent so that one hand/arm and one knee touches the mat
- Throws the opponent outside of the competition area while remaining in the area
- Is the process of executing an effective technique at the same time that the end of the round is signaled
- If both competitors fall
- No score if they land side by side
- One point to the competitor landing on top of the other
Illegal Techniques
The following may result in a penalty or a foul (at the arbitrator's discretion)
- Evading or stalling (more than ten seconds during a throw)
- Executing or attempting any kind of impact blow
- Gouging to any part of the body
- All finger, wrist and joint locks alone and/or locks executed with disregard to the opponent’s safety
- Hair grabbing
- Chokes
- Continuing the match outside the competition area
- Speaking during the match
- Arguing with and/or disobeying officials
- Disregard for opponent's safety
- Any other conditions the Referee feels unnecessary
Tie-Break Round
- One three (3) minute tie break round if there are no points or if tied after 3 rounds: first competitor to score wins
- If no points are given during the tie-break round, then the contestant who scored the first point during regulation wins
- If there are no points in regulation and tie-break rounds, a winner is named by the judges based upon:
- Fighting spirit and attitude
- Superiority of tactics and techniques
